The blackout kaleidoscope is designed to function during a power failure. It uses a candle as a light source and has a set of mirrors to focus the candles light into the object case of the scope. It also incorporates a fresnel lens to magnify the candle light. I t works very well in the dark and equally well in the light.
This scope is made of yellowheart and coco-bolo and incorporates a base mounted wheel which turns the object case through a gear train. It has a six point mandala with filled ampoules and hand made lamp work. It is the first of a new series of one-of-a-kind scopes that are not polyangular. It does, however have many of the features of the Nonpareil series, such as an accessible object case and ball bearing action.
